On Friday, the JMU PRSSA traveled to Washington D.C. to visit four of the top PR agencies. Beginning at the crack of dawn, the dukes began their journey and began the day with a delicious, filling, brunch preparing themselves for their first visit at FleishmanHillard. Greeted by one of our very own Dukes alum, Brian Hrubik, the JMU PRSSA sat down in a ginormous conference room and learned about their top clients and favorite projects the staff has worked on. Hrubik also gave the Dukes a few pointers about resumes and what stands out to them when selecting interns. Due to the tight schedule, the JMU PRSSA rushed upstairs to meet another Dukes alumni, Kendra Kojcsich at Porter Novelli. At Porter Novelli, PRSSA was given a quick presentation about Porter Novelli learning about their top clients, Walt Disney and ALS Bucket Challenge. By far, this was the favorite agency due to the free pizza and drinks and the personal hand drawn James Madison welcome poster signed by all the staff. Later in the day, the JMU PRSSA walked to their next agency, Edelman, where they were welcomed by several JMU Alumni. Eldeman provided PRSSA the opportunity to experience a typical day as a PR practitioner by giving a specific case scenario that PRSSA had to come up with one tweet and headline about a new shoe brand. The Dukes had an enjoyable time coming up with the creative tweets. Eldeman also provided PRSSA the opportunity to receive feedback on each and everyone’s resumes helping them tweak it enough to land the job or internship. The Dukes left Eldeman with great intelligence about real life clients and resumes. Finally, JMU PRSSA ended the day at Allison + Partners. At this point, it was the end of the day and everyone was getting sleepy. Allison + Partners gave a delightful presentation and gave the PRSSA members advice on how to be successful in Public Relations. After a long and eventual day, the Dukes headed down to The Front Page for an Alumni Reception. Several alumni came out including a few from the agencies that PRSSA had visited that day. PRSSA members had a great day and learned at least one thing from every agency. The members look forward to visiting again next year and for the next agency trip later this spring in Richmond! Do you have a goal this year to become more organized? You will immediately step in the right direction by just purchasing a planner. Organization is important in college and good organizational skills are a key attribute of successful professionals. Like most things you do, the more you work on improving your organizational skills and techniques the better you will be at keeping track of your tasks and responsibilities. Since good organizational skills will allow you to succeed in the workplace, college is a great time to start developing them. A simple but effective tool to keep your organized is the time tested paper planner. I prefer a daily planner that has room for month to month planning. We all have many things going on in our daily lives such as attending classes, extra credit events, sports games, office hours, sorority or fraternity functions, etc. In order to keep track of everything going on and to relieve some stress, a planner is the best solution. Here are some useful tips on how to enhance your organizational skills and use your daily planner effectively: Tip 1: Try using different colored pens or highlighters to separate class times, workout times, team practices, or any other organization meetings. Separating different parts of your daily schedule with a color code makes it easier to quickly find things. Tip 2: Write everything down! Put all upcoming dates for all of your daily tasks for the next two months so you know exactly what you have available. This will help you plan ahead and be prepared for potential employers when they ask to set up an interview or a phone call. Tip 3: Have your “to do” list in the notes section of your planner each day to remind you of your daily tasks and goals. Having these tasks in front of you each day encourages you to get things done. We all love crossing off those tasks! Tip 4: Set deadlines for yourself to make sure you get things done on time. This will help you get ahead with work and not be stressed when the deadline approaches. Enjoy being organized and know that it will only help make your life easier in college and the organizational skills you develop will help you in the future. Happy organizing!
