My name: Gina Jelliff Company: Maroon PR - Cal Ripken World Series Location: Aberdeen, MD About the company: Maroon PR is a full-service public relations and marketing agency who works with Ripken Baseball and the Cal Ripken World Series. The Cal Ripken World Series is “where the world comes to play.” There are 10 U.S. teams and 8 international teams that play in the 12u Major/70 division of the Babe Ruth League. The CRWS takes place at The Ripken Experience Powered by Under Armour which consists of seven fields. Some of the fields are named after professional baseball fields and they even include signature pieces of those fields. The main field known as Cal Sr.’s Yard is designed after Oriole Park at Camden Yards. It includes stadium seating, concessions, merchandise tents, dugouts and the Warehouse which is the Marriott hotel. The 10 day tournament consists of opening ceremonies, pool play, semi-finals, U.S. and international championship, and lastly closing ceremonies with a world championship. Intern Duties: Before arriving in Aberdeen for the CRWS, I was assigned to be the team reporter for Team Canada. Each week I produced a feature story leading up to the tournament which was promoted on Tumblr and Twitter. I attended each game that Canada played in and tweeted about the score changes and what was occurring throughout the games. After the games, I was in charge taking the player of the game and a coach from Canada to a post-game press conference at the AT&T Media Center. I produced game recaps and more feature stories throughout the week. What I've learned: This internship allowed me to receive a hands on experience with social media and sports writing. I learned what it is like to be a reporter for a sport and what happens behind the scenes with a team. Favorite Part: My favorite part of the internship was being able to work with Team Canada. The coaches, players and host families were all so welcoming and made the experience fun. I loved being able to tweet for Team Canada's account because not all of the families could attend and the Twitter account allowed them to feel like they were there. I got to attend a team barbecue at the home of a host family, spend the day in Washington, D.C. and at an Orioles game with the team. One of the first days, I went to Under Armour Headquarters in Baltimore and was able to watch Team Canada receive their uniforms. The look on the players' faces were priceless. Also, I got to meet Cal Ripken, Jr.!! *Gina interned alongside our Vice President, Matt Goodie

What I've learned: I learned a lot about the importance of social media management and marketing/communications in the business environment specifically. I also learned how the different aspects of communications (social media posts, the website, graphic design, etc.) really come together to create a consistent brand. My name: Lauren Ruzinsky Company: Alice Marshall Public Relations Location: New York, New York About the company: Alice Marshall Public Relations is a firm that specializes in luxury travel and goods. The clients range from exceptional high-end hotels to exotic spas and skincare products. Intern Duties: I help manage five different accounts, whether that is clipping articles, writing social media posts, or taking notes during conference calls. It's true what they say - no day in PR is the same. Some days I'm running an errand across town and others I'm writing pitches to send out to bloggers. What I've learned: I have learned so much about the travel industry, especially the luxury sector. I'm always researching top travel trends. I have also learned about the importance of building relationships, especially with media outlets and their journalists. My name: Angela Seretis Company: Farm Bureau Live Location: Virginia Beach, VA About the company: Farm Bureau is a concert venue that hosts concerts by artists from Tim McGraw to Big Sean. Intern duties: I do a lot of different tasks. I run the social media, send out set list emails, and file. I work every concert and escort radio stations into where to set up and escort photographers into the Pitt to take pictures (only during the first 3 songs of each act). My name: David Lafferty Company name: Memorial Health Location: Marysville, OH About the Company: Memorial Health is a fairly large hospital system in Central Ohio with over 30 service lines, 160 skilled physicians, 600 employees, over 500 volunteers and around 20 physician office and specialty care locations associated with them. Intern duties: I'm managing their social media outlets, primarily Facebook. As well, as working with the PR & Marketing team on several different hospital projects and initiatives! Most days here I'm working between 4-5 different projects! What I've learned: I've learned that the Health field is a different type of organization when it comes to PR. It's more about communicating the hospital as a brand really, we need patients to come to us and in turn provide them with the care we publicized to them in the beginning. |
