On Monday, March 2, PRSSA held its annual Executive Board Elections for the 2015-2016 year at 7:00pm. Prior to elections, prospective candidates were able to apply for up to two positions online and meet with members of the current executive board for the position they were interested in. Members came prepared to the two hour meeting with professional attire, and speeches on why they believed they were strong potential leaders for JMU’s chapter of PRSSA. Members could not run from the floor; however, members could be nominated to run so long as they had another member second a nomination. Beginning with elections for President, McKenzie Carroll found herself without any competitors at the podium—however, she would have been able to handle competition had she needed to. Well prepared with a speech and a strong presence, Carroll secured her spot as President of the 2015-2016 JMU PRSSA chapter. Next were elections for Vice President, in which Amberly Millis and Matt Goodie both ran. Millis addressed her audience with a traditional written speech, whereas Goodie decided to go paperless, and made a point of addressing that to his audience. Goodie ultimately received the most votes and was named Vice President for next year’s Executive Board. Following Vice President elections were elections for Director of Professional Development. Both Gina Jeliff and Lauren Ruzinsky ran, and each took a different approach. Jeliff came up with a pneumonic device for giving the best professional handshakes to try and captivate her audience, whereas Ruzinsky relied on keeping her speech concise. Professional Advisor Don Egle let the current president, Brittany Tibaldi, know that it was a close vote, announcing the new Director of Professional Development was Ruzinsky. Next, three candidates ran for the position of Director of Media Relations; Becca Malzahn, Jeanne Dolan, and Samantha D’Addario. All three members are part of the Social Media and Graphic Design Committee, which they would oversee next year in gaining the position. The three candidates had strong speeches and experience, making it tough for the members to choose. After another close vote, Malzahn secured her spot as the new Director of Media Relations. For the Director of Internal Communication, there was originally only one applicant, Samantha D’Addario. However, Gina Jeliff and Maddy Ley were nominated by fellow PRSSA members to run for this position as the campaigning was about to begin. All three candidates had solid, yet unique speeches. However, D’Addario received the most votes and is the new Director of Internal Communications. Lastly, there were elections for Director of Finance. Angela Seretis was the only candidate running, and she held her own with a speech that listed years of experience, financial and organizational skills. Deservedly so, Seretis is the new director of finance. There were many admirable candidates for Monday night’s elections and JMU PRSSA is fortunate to have such devoted members. Congrats to the newly elected Executive Board members, and thank you to all candidates for showcasing yourselves, and all voting members. We are lucky to have you all. By Samantha D’Addario
